Spot of the Day 16 : Mazda Familia Pickup

More Retro Pickup Love!

Yet another ultra‑cool retro old‑skool pickup spotted right here in Khon Kaen!

This time it’s a Mazda Familia 1400E, dating back to the late ’80s or early ’90s by our guess.

Against today’s towering modern trucks, this little thing looks almost toy‑sized. Back in the day, Thai farmers and families relied on these compact workhorses, and many still remember them fondly for their reliability and usefulness.

This particular example has a story: owned by an American expat who lovingly restored it, adding his own touches like the wheels and side graphics (which are a clever twist on the originals, reshaped to suit the body lines better). Under the hood, the 1400 motor hasn’t been left stock either—better breathing, a freer exhaust, and a reliable electronic ignition have unlocked a few extra horses. In a truck this small and light, that’s enough to surprise more than a few modern cars when the lights turn green. Love it!

For us, this little Mazda is proof that the modified and restored scene in Thailand is as popular as ever.
